Winds workshop with Lumas Winds at the Caird Hall, 13 February 2024

Fourteen young people playing clarinet, flute, oboe and tenor horn joined the five musicians from Lumas Winds for a workshop on performance of Holst’s Second Suite in E.

On behalf of Dundee Schools, Phil McGregor said:

We do a lot of large ensemble work we do a huge amount of it, Senior Wind Band, Concert Band but they’re all 40-50 people. It’s a completely different skill set when you’re one of five and the exposure that comes from that. This is a group that I’m going to speak to the team about to say let’s keep a small but really high end focus on music making in here and you’re the kind of start of it.

The young people performed in a group with Lumas Winds and also worked with individual members.

It was really fun, I learned a lot and they were really nice to us.

It was a new perspective on playing with people. I learned skills that I’ve never seen before.

It was very different from like all the other things that we’ve been to. It’s helped me a lot with how I’m going to improve skills like the warm ups
